When demonstrations are difficult to disperse or turn violent, tear gas is sometimes fired by the apparatus at action participants to control the situation. Tear gas used at the demonstration site can spread to the surrounding environment, especially if carried by the wind. It is not possible that you may also be exposed to tear gas without realizing it.
Tear gas contains active ingredients, such as chloroacetophenone (CN) and chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile (CS). These chemicals can cause a number of symptoms in people who are exposed, such as red and hot eyes, heavy tears, and blurred vision.
Not only that, the tear gas effect can also be:
- Runny nose, reddened, and swollen.
- Shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing.
- Irritation and burning sensation in the mouth.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Rashes and heat on the skin.
Perform this step if you are exposed to tear gas
When exposed to tear gas, try to remain calm and do not panic. Perform the following steps:1. Minimize inhaled tear gas
If there is tear gas near you, try to minimize the gas inhaled. Cover your nose and mouth tightly, then immediately run to a safe place far from the location of tear gas shooting. If by chance you bring a mask, wear it immediately. Do not hesitate to ask first aid from health workers who are on duty in the field if you experience shortness of breath.2. Wash clothes and body parts that are exposed to tear gas
After you move away from the location of the tear gas fired, check your clothes and body. If your clothes or skin are exposed to tear gas, wash immediately with clean water and soap. This method can protect you and those around you from tear gas contamination that sticks to your clothes and body. If gas hits the eyes, rinse immediately by flowing clean water into the eyes for 10-15 minutes. Avoid rubbing the eyes so they don't get sore. If you wear contact lenses, take them off and don't use them again. Meanwhile, if you wear glasses, rinse with water and soap thoroughly before reuse.3. Change clothes
Clothing that is exposed to tear gas must be removed and replaced immediately. Especially for clothes that are removed past the head, it is recommended to cut them. If you help other people take off their clothes, be careful not to touch the part that is exposed to tear gas. Separate clothing that is exposed to tear gas when you wash it. If the gas contamination is severe and difficult to remove, put the clothes in plastic, then dispose of it in a B3 (dangerous and poisonous) waste dump.4. Bathing
Take a shower immediately to cleanse your body of the remnants of tear gas that may still be attached to the skin. Rinse the entire body, including hair, using water from a shower or shower. Do not bathe in a bath, to avoid further contamination from tear gas mixed with bathtub water. After you carry out the steps above, immediately visit a doctor to get further examination and treatment according to complaints that arise.- Dermaga Apung HDPE
